Pray for Earthquake-Affected Venezuela – An Update from WAGF’s Prayer Network

The World Assemblies of God Fellowship (WAGF) has released the following prayer call.

It has been over two weeks since two strong earthquakes that struck Venezuela within seconds of one another, causing widespread damage to homes and buildings in several parts of the country.

Venezuela’s authorities say the death toll from twin earthquakes last month has risen to 3,889, with at least 16,740 people injured and 17,907 displaced.

More than 55,000 people remain unaccounted for on the national missing-persons platform, of which 123 are children.

Authorities now report more than 940 aftershocks, with 856 to 2,501 buildings damaged, including 190 confirmed collapses.

The first earthquake – with a magnitude of 7.2 – struck a town to the west of the capital, Caracas, and the second 7.5-magnitude quake hit in a similar location just 38 seconds later.

Health Issues:

Since the search and rescue efforts are coming to an end, Venezuela now is at risk of disease and other health issues. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) warned that displaced people across Venezuela’s northern coast, the area most affected by the tremors, are at risk of disease because of limited access to clean water and regular medical care.

“In the coming weeks, the greatest health risks may stem not only from injuries caused by the earthquakes, but also from disruptions to health services, overcrowded conditions, deficiencies in water and sanitation, and reduced access to vaccination and routine healthcare,” PAHO’s director said.

The agency is working with Venezuela’s health ministry to improve vaccine access and trace any outbreaks of respiratory or digestive illnesses, especially in shelters set up for those who lost their homes.

The United Nations launched an appeal for roughly $300 million to assist 1.3 million people in urgent need of aid in Venezuela.
