The Gift of Peace
Christmas, what a wonderful yet busy time of year! Among the hustle and bustle, many of us are engaging in cherished traditions such as church activities, family gatherings, delightful meals, purchasing and unwrapping presents.
Can you think of a special gift you received that left a lasting impression? I do.
When I was a child, I recalled the day my father surprised me with a doll I had desperately wanted, asking him daily, "Dad, could you please buy me Cricket the doll!?!" When the day finally arrived, he handed me a beautiful doll with a cheerful smile, his eyes filled with excitement. Now that he's residing in his heavenly home, that special exchange represents a joyful childhood memory and my father's love - truly a gift that was worth the wait!

The Advent season, which lasts four weeks, focuses on preparing for Christ's arrival, marked by the four Sundays leading up to Christmas. Over 2,000 years ago, angels announced the arrival of the Messiah and shepherds spread the good news of His birth. Jesus, the Son of God was born of the Virgin Mary in the town of Bethlehem through the power of the Holy Spirit to establish a new covenant. Hebrews 13:20-21 contains a benediction and encouragement, highlighting the Lord as "the God of peace" and affirming salvation through His Son.
It brings me joy to share the story of Christ with those who have lost hope and are wrestling with deep feelings of fear and anxiety. The gospel message brings a profound sense of anticipation to a person's life, even in the darkest of circumstances. As a Mission Canada worker involved in urban ministry, I have developed meaningful relationships and have engaged in many faith-based discussions. For some, the Christmas season can become a source of stress, often leaving individuals feeling isolated, alone, or even struggling with deep depression. The whirlwind of activities, family disagreements, financial hardships, and the weight of unmet expectations can create significant emotional strain.
Building friendships with others fosters genuine connections and shared experiences. Gaining insight into someone's life strengthens deeper bonds and encourages vulnerability, especially for those dealing with pain or past trauma. I recall a conversation I had with a woman who had faced numerous challenges, leaving her feeling utterly disheartened. Sitting face to face, each of us holding a cup of coffee, I listened intently as she poured out her heart.

She shared her deep fears and the burdens she was carrying, feeling isolated and lacking support during this challenging time in her life. When I gently reminded her of Christ's redemptive story - of hope, something remarkable happened. A calmness washed over her and tears began to stream down her cheeks. In that moment, she realized she was not alone and that there was a caring Christian community eager to walk alongside her in rediscovering a renewed sense of peace.
In Hebrews 10:19-25, the writer encourages readers to be confident in Christ's work and to be grateful for His sacrifices, allowing believers to approach Him with a genuine heart. Just as the temple curtain was torn on Good Friday, Christ's unblemished body was broken for humanity, serving as our Great Priest. Christians are urged to hold onto hope in Christ and support each other, with anticipation of His second coming. Christmas is a touching reminder that beyond the excitement of material gifts, there is a greater purpose that can guide and lead us in our darkest moments. God's presence provides peace and unity, encouraging us to promote harmony with those around us during this joyful time.

This Christmas season inspires me to express a heartfelt thanks to God for the precious gift of His Son, who chose to live obediently as a servant to His Father. Jesus came to serve, rather than be served, and even washed the disciples' feet as an act of humility. His grace fills our hearts with love as we cultivate our daily relationship with Him. In anticipation of His return, we can find peace and comfort in His guidance through life's trials and triumphs.
I wish you and your family a blessed Christmas, filled with God's incredible gift of peace this season!
